Structural Engineering Cases
Test Tower – for Vertical Pipehandling System

Tower globally designed by others, but no local checks have been made, when building of structure has already started. Typical detail types – of bolted and welded column-to-beam connections were checked quickly. Most of the parts have been found structurally sound, but a few critical details were very weak, and could have caused collapsing of structure. As an example – the diagonal bracings were made of tension rods with threaded/bolted ends. The bolting plate was weak – and in case of a high wind, this would have bent & diagonals slipped. Therefore fast handsketches have been made and with the use of some extra plates welded on site, the whole tower has been reinforced significantly.
